Day 25 – Hitting Her Stride

Today Anna did 172 Ks. Big effort and there’s more to come over the next few days. I caught up with her for a brief pit stop on the way but by then she had just about crushed it with only 45 ks to go. She really seems to be very bike-fit. When she gets off the bike she shows no distress. I was going to say something expansive but it immediately had the feel of a jinx. Of course neither of us believe in that sort of stuff – most of the time 😉

This afternoon we made some modifications to how one of her shoes clips in. It was only minor but a bit of plastic from a hardware shop on the beach plus the angle grinder and drill we brought did the job.

We are camped at Cardwell which is opposite Hinchinbrook Island. Cardwell is tropical, sleepy, friendly and pretty and the Park we are in is full of palms and tropical plants, shady and really nice. Small and quiet.

Another question:

What determines your route, Why did Anna go into Brisbane CBD, who makes the rules about a Big Lap?

The organisation which makes the rules is called the Road Record Association of Australia. Here’s the short answer to what constitutes a Lap.

AROUND AUSTRALIA “THE LAP”

Around Australia records must cover a minimum of 14,200kms, and must pass through at least 6 of the following cities/towns- Adelaide, Brisbane, Broome, Darwin, Esperance, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney. In the interest of safety riders are only required to pass within 10km of the CBD of the southern capitals. Unsupported records are exactly that, no support vehicle is permitted, and pre-arranged local assistance or supply drops are only permitted in a maximum of four places. An observer car is not required for unsupported records.
