We are in Croydon, another ex-gold mining town. It’s a just bit bigger than Georgetown but seems to have a similar history of gold rush, boom and bust in the late 1800’s. Athough it’s easy to believe there was a bit more money made here. There seems to have been a bit of recent money spent on the place too. It’s the “seat of local government” and there’s a quite significant historical precinct which Spikey and I visited while the Athlete slept.
There’s a courthouse, jail, old cop-shop, town hall and a nice looking pub too.

And there’s old mining machinery scattered all through the town.

We are pretty remote here and the country is now 100% “Outback Australia”. Quite a lot of sheoak trees and whilst it’s dry as hell at present, they get a few metres of rain in the summer. Consequently the road is full of bridges over (currently) dry creeks.
Getting warm now too.

As the heat rises Anna is starting to feel it a bit. She was not her usual happy, friendly self when she got off the bike this afternoon so Spike and I gave her a drink and scuttled out of the way.
Luckily the caravan park we’re in is quite nice, the customers are not packed like sardines and it has a deserted pool, which helped her to cool down.

On to Normanton tomorrow, the Gulf of Carpentaria, a one day holiday and crocs……..
