Day 10 – Riding to the Goldie

Ouuuffff… Started off super cold (weird!), then up a number of ramps, each one over 10% (though away from the main traffic), descents, no shoulders to ride in, potholes… and a few wrong turns. Uhm. I hit a back trail (Billinudgel Nature Reserve) which was really nice, but slowed me down quite a bit, and then it was coastline all the way – pedestrians, loads of roadwork and traffic lights, starting and stopping too much. I try to do the right thing and follow bike lanes and paths where they exist, always stop at red lights (!), and when there’s the occasional dick in the middle of the path, I stop and let them do what they need to do. All in all, that means I was on the bike for an eternity today. Made it to the Gold Coast, where we are staying in the most expensive park so far ($110!!), and we are packed like sardines. I am thinking about a business opportunity here…

The Gold Coast is a big scar on the landscape. High-rise buildings, concrete and steel and glass all around. They may as well have a koala park here, indeed, as they cannot climb on those condos. Not my thing, I must admit, but perhaps it’s just age. Or perhaps it is because I have seen better places to live.

We are outta here tomorrow – heading to Brisbane, which is not going to be fun either, but someone’s gotta do it.
