Speaking of big rivers, we are now camped for the night on the shores of the Clarence River. It’s a huge, big, beautiful river. I’d love to steam up it in the African Queen. We are at Mclean which seems to be an especially nice town and is just upstream from the Clarence mouth at Yamba. Maclean has a very Scottish theme and all of the electricity poles are decorated in different clan tartans. It seems that the Scots settled it and have thrown a big Scottish party each year since 1894. Some of my new friends in Mclean tell me we must go to Yamba where there is a great pub right on the water but regrettably that won’t happen. The road beckons.
The weather has definitely changed, as has the geography. Now there are cane fields on either side of the road and Google tells me that’s a $3B business for Australia.
Our camp spot is in the Maclean showgrounds which is only $20/night and has just 10 spots on offer. Luckily I arrived reasonably early and it was almost empty. “This is great,” I thought but the word got around and now it’s full.

What a pity you missed out on rehydration in Yamba’s “Fountain By The Sea” (aka – Pacific Hotel) Hope you fed your cyclist some of those banana prawns from the Clarence river.
