Day 9 – Riding into Byron Bay

A much better ride today, as I concentrated on the recovery yesterday, and that definitely made a difference. The fact that the route was a lot flatter and was seaside for a while must have helped too…

The highlight was the Burns Point Ferry – super cool. This ferry is chain driven, and just goes between the two points all day until very late. $1.50 fare for the bike – LOL. On the road there, a very angry bird attacked repeatedly, and hit my sunglasses, WTF. I was afraid of shooing it away with my hand, so I ducked and yelled until I was far enough away. This whole thing of magpies remembering faces is utter BS, IMHO. And I have told them many times that cyclists do NOT climb trees to steal their eggs, but they just do not listen.

On the other side of the ferry ride were Ballina and the Big Prawn. It wasn’t my destination, but I planted the brakes and skidded to a halt for the obligatory photo.

Up the coast, ocean on the right side, it was a good ride all the way to Byron Bay. After being a bit worried yesterday, I got some confidence back – though you never know, in 3-4 months’ time how this is going to feel.

We are staying in a large park tonight. Poor Spike got pinged for existing. The guy is old and disinterested enough that he should really be left alone – Spike that is.

I changed the compost in the toilet – some miraculous device that composting toilet, though the job is always mine. Justin is feigning low skills at making the right mixture, and he thinks I am so much better at doing it. Justin 1, Anna 0.

I have been eating a lot more in the past 36h. Legs are holding up OK, but I am starting to be a true believer that at least 50% of tiredness is in the head. And when I get tired, I get impatient, which never helps as I start looking at the distance to go every 10 seconds. Though I do not feel a great deal of insightfulness, to date, I know there will be dark moments where I will have to fight the Jekyll and Hyde sides, metaphorically speaking.

Eating chicken tonight.
